The View From 30,000 feet: The Principles of Transportation Funding
February 27, 2008
The Get Georgia Moving Coalition, an unprecedented alliance, has worked hard over the past 9 months to come to a consensus on a way to provide mobility and connectivity for all Georgians.
We applaud the work of the Joint House and Senate Transportation Funding Study committee, and appreciate the sense of urgency the legislature has afforded this issue.
The coalition is focused on a new transportation vision that promotes economic prosperity, a higher quality of life and environmental sustainability. Sound transportation planning should guarantee adequate funding now and in the future, and promote projects that benefit the diverse needs of all citizens and areas of this state.
The Get Georgia Moving coalition believes we must expand our vision beyond the state’s roads and bridges to provide for a secure future. All modes of transportation, including transit, must be adequately supported by Georgia’s transportation funding system, and the revenue generated should apply to both capital and operating expenses.
The coalition remains flexible as funding concepts and proposals are considered, and we hope to contribute to the discussion. Our goal is a measure that would allow citizens to vote on funding for a transportation infrastructure that will serve Georgia now and into the future.
